As we continue to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of trade and commerce, it is crucial to stay informed about the policies that impact our business environment. With that in mind, the World Trade Center New Orleans has compiled a resource, outlining the latest news and information on tariffs.

Canada

President Trump authored an executive order that would implement a 25% additional tariff on imports from Canada and a 10% import tariff on energy and energy resources form Canada. Energy resources subject to the 10% import tariff include:  crude oil, natural gas, lease condensates, natural gas liquids, refined petroleum products, uranium, coal, biofuels, geothermal heat, the kinetic movement of flowing water, and critical minerals.

Tariffs on all imported goods from Canada that are covered by the USMCA free trade treaty are exempt from tariffs until April 2, 2025.

As a result, Canada imposed tariffs on select U.S. exports to Canada.

Tariffs on both American and Canadian goods are effective as of 12:01 a.m., March 4, 2025

Effective March 12, 2025, the Trump Administration has placed a 50% tariff on all steel and aluminum from Canada.

Mexico

President Trump authored an executive order that would implement a 25% tariff on all imports from Mexico.

Tariffs on all imported goods from Mexcio that are covered by the USMCA free trade treaty are exempt from tariffs until April 2, 2025.

China

Effective February 4th, the Trump Administration imposed a 10% tariff on all U.S. imports from China.

Effective as of 12:01 a.m., March 4, 2025, the Trump Administration increased the tariff on China to 20%. The tariff also applies to goods from Hong Kong.

In response, China imposed a 15% tariff on select U.S. exports to the country on coal, LNG, chicken, wheat, corn, and cotton and a 10% tariff on crude oil, agricultural products and machinery, automobiles and trucks.

Steel & Aluminum

On February 11th, President Trump signed an executive order, restoring a 25% tariff on all steel imports and elevating the tariff to 25% on all aluminum imports. These tariffs will go into effect beginning March 12, 2025.

Effective March 12, 2025, the Trump Administration has placed a 50% tariff on all steel and aluminum from Canada.

Reciprocal Tariffs

On February 13,2025 , President Trump ordered his trade advisers to come up with “reciprocal” tariffs on trade partners that impost a tariff on U.S. exports. It is expected that a comprehensive plan will be developed by the Trump Administration by April 1, 2025.
