The C. Alvin Bertel Award is presented annually to an individual in recognition of outstanding contributions to the advancement of the Greater New Orleans port area.

Gene Schreiber served from 1979 until July of this year as Managing Director of the World Trade Center of New Orleans. The WTC is a nonprofit organization of 1,500 corporate and individual members that is dedicated to the advancement of New Orleans and Louisiana’s international trade, port activity, and economic development.
Established in 1943, the WTC was the first of what are now more than 300 World Trade Center organizations in nearly 100 countries. WTC New Orleans is active in a wide range of international trade seminars, conferences, country briefings, trade missions, legislative affairs, trade publications and other trade promotion programs.
During the past 30 years the WTC organized under Mr. Schreiber’s direction over 1,500 international trade events. In recognition of its efforts, the WTC received the President’s “E” and “E-Star” Awards for outstanding contributions to the expansion of United States exports.
Mr. Schreiber also serves on a number of other boards, including as Chairman of the Louisiana Tax Free Shopping Commission since its inception in 1988 and as a member of the Louisiana Export Council. He is a frequent speaker at international trade seminars and training courses.
Prior to joining the WTC, Mr. Schreiber worked for 15 years in international trade and investment development positions as a Foreign Service Officer of the U.S. Department of State and as an Associate with Booz-Allen and Hamilton management consultants. His overseas assignments included U.S. Embassy positions in Bolivia, Uganda, Brazil and Guatemala. He also served in Tanzania as a member of the United States’ first contingent of Peace Corps Volunteers sent abroad in 1961 under President Kennedy.
A native of St. Louis, Mr. Schreiber received his B.S. degree in civil engineering from Purdue University and his law degree from George Washington University. He also served as an officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
