The Panama Canal expansion, which is scheduled to be completed in 2014, will double its capacity and allow more containers to be shipped to U.S. Gulf ports. The big question is which ports will be the main beneficiaries of the expected increased cargoes?

The Port of New Orleans has proposed a $500 million expansion of its Uptown container facilities to accommodate the Canal's expansion, and the Louisiana International Deep Water Gulf Transfer Terminal Authority (LIGTT), is planning an international container port at the mouth of the Mississippi River.
